Terni

Terni is a small city of about 110,000 inhabitants, tranquil and pleasant to live in, surrounded by green hills and characterized by its industrial vocation.

The presence of steel mills and other large industries has significantly influenced the structure of the city and its population. Even today, despite a reduced industrial presence, Terni remains a modern city from an architectural standpoint, while still preserving clear traces of its Roman and medieval past.

Strolling through the city center, you will feel as if you are in a 20th-century town, rebuilt after the bombings of World War II, featuring remarkable buildings, some designed by the Roman architect Mario Ridolfi.

The sense of modernity is further enhanced by the stunning obelisk “Lancia di Luce” (Spear of Light), located at the end of Corso del Popolo, a masterpiece by Arnaldo Pomodoro, symbolizing the refinement and transformation of iron, from its raw state to the shining finished product.

In the historic center, not far from the obelisk, we recommend visiting the Church of San Salvatore, the oldest church in the city, of Paleochristian origin, with its unique circular layout.

Also dating back to the Roman period is the amphitheater, located within the Passeggiata City Park, where you can still see parts of opus reticulatum and the original elliptical structure.

Terni’s historic center is a pleasure to explore on foot, with its charming streets: Corso Tacito, Corso Vecchio, Via Roma, Via Cavour

While walking, you will notice elegant patrician palaces, one of the most impressive being Palazzo Spada, home to Terni’s City Hall, attributed to Antonio da Sangallo the Younger.

You will also find historic churches of great interest, such as San Francesco and the Duomo.

For a relaxing outdoor experience, visit the Nera River Park (urban river park), an excellent spot for sports activities or a peaceful stroll.

If you enjoy running or trekking, there are many trails available both within the city and in its immediate surroundings.

Despite its industrial history, Terni has a deeply romantic soul!

Every year, the city honors Saint Valentine, its patron saint, with the Valentine’s Day celebrations, culminating in the February 14th festival.
